Learning by doing. With the Music Center as backdrop and complete with the everyday sounds of downtown city life, each Public Practice session displays the process of practice, not performance, by a local, recreational musician immersed in warm-ups, scales, individual measures, tempo, short melodies, repetition or an unfamiliar piece of music.

Participation in Public Practice is via an application process. Nonprofessional, adult musicians are selected based on their understanding of Public Practice principles, as well as their passion for music and participating. Musicians are not chosen based on skill level or extent of musical training. There is no audition.

Instrumental to the success of Public Practice are Active Arts volunteers (also known as Activators). A small team of Activators are very hands-on in helping to develop and launch the pilot phase of this project -- a unique opportunity for Activators to be involved in Active Arts programming. Volunteers work in collaboration with their peers and staff to review/select musicians, as well as provide valuable input on how the program can be improved for the future.
